De-schooling in Masti ki Pathshala: The Roadmap for Dissidence in Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s Rang De Basanti
Shailendra Kumar Singh discourses on the conscious unlearning undertaken by characters in Rang De Basanti as part of “masti ki pathshala”, and how this unlearning enables political truancy which translates such de-schooling to dissidence. Keeping in mind class dynamics, he proposes that through a rejection of conventional forms of learning and education, the characters manage to de-school themselves in order to be re-invigorate themselves for meaningful social and political intervention through resistance.
Deconstructing the experiences of growing up as a male through a theme-based analysis of Udaan
Ravneet Kaur makes a thematic study of Udaan in order to locate it within in a strictly gendered society. The study is made with detailed references to male-male relationships within a familial set-up. Father-son relationships are analysed and it is argued that due to socialisation and sociological processes, fathers tend to be harsh unto their sons and expect them to imbibe masculine traits and habits like them. It also comments on the alternate father–figures in the movie and how these figures challenge and dismantle the conventional patriarchal paradigms in society.
